Cognata teaches English, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, Romanian and Catalan side by side, through the language students already know, with every word traced to its Latin root and tagged as a cognate or not. Teachers get classes, assignments, and a progress dashboard; students get a course that turns what they already know into what they can guess.

What it is

Starts from what students know. Every word is tagged cognate, distant cognate or not related relative to the student's own language — English included — so students see how much they can already recognize.
Seven languages, one platform. Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, Romanian and Catalan classes share the same content and tools — and a student who knows one sister learns the next one faster.
Pronunciation, taken seriously. IPA for every word, speech-recognition practice, and minimal-pair drills built the way speech-language professionals train contrasts.

For teachers

Classes in minutes. Create a class, share a six-character join code, and students are in. No installs: it runs in any modern browser, on computers and phones.
Assignments that fit your plan. Assign flashcard decks, grammar lessons, dialogues, sound laws and quizzes, with due dates.
Progress you can show. A live dashboard per class, a CSV export, and a printable outcomes report with activity, scores, assignment completion, and the words students found hardest.

A free semester for pilot schools

Schools that join the pilot program use Cognata free for one semester, for every teacher and student taking part. No payment details needed to start.

School plan: $12 per student seat per year, from 25 seats, with unlimited teachers and classes.

A single teacher can also start alone with the Teacher plan: $149 per year, up to 3 classes and 40 students.
