The Latin ancestor
IOCĀTŌREM‘joker, jester (from IOCUS 'joke')’
All six sisters descend from it, unless marked otherwise below.
The story
Latin IOCUS was a joke; spoken Latin made it the word for play, so a player was once a jester. Spanish voiced the c to g (jugador), French lost it altogether (joueur).
