If: conditional sentences
si, se, dacă: three kinds of 'if', and the tense French forbids after it.
An 'if' sentence comes in three shapes: a real condition (if it rains, I stay in), an unreal one about now (if it rained, I would stay in), and an unreal one about the past (if it had rained, I would have stayed in). Latin put both halves of an unreal condition in the subjunctive. The sisters keep the subjunctive in the if-clause, put the new conditional in the main clause, and disagree on the details.

| If it rained, I'd stay home. |

The forbidden conditional
French never puts the conditional or the future after a conditional si: s'il pleuvait, not *s'il pleuvrait; French children learn the rhyme 'les si n'aiment pas les -rais'. Spanish and Italian forbid it too, although si tendría is heard in parts of northern Spain and se avrei is a famous mark of careless Italian. Romanian is the one sister where the conditional on both sides is correct: dacă aș avea, aș da. In casual speech the sisters also simplify. Italians say se lo sapevo, venivo 'if I'd known, I'd have come' with two imperfects; Portuguese speakers say se eu tivesse dinheiro, comprava with an imperfect where the grammar asks for compraria; Spanish freely uses the -ra form in both halves of a past condition (si lo hubiera sabido, no hubiera venido).
Se vedi Ana, dille di chiamarmi.
Si ves a Ana, dile que me llame.
Dacă o vezi pe Ana, spune-i să mă sune.
If you see Ana, tell her to call me.
Portuguese vir here is the future subjunctive of ver 'to see', not the infinitive 'to come'.
Se vuoi, possiamo andarci domani.
Si quieres, podemos ir mañana.
Si tu veux, on peut y aller demain.
If you like, we can go tomorrow.
Portuguese quiser: future subjunctive again, where the others use the present.
Se fossi in te, non ci andrei.
Yo que tú, no iría.
À ta place, je n'irais pas.
Se eu fosse você, não iria.
În locul tău, n-aș merge.
Jo de tu, no hi aniria.
If I were you, I wouldn't go.
Spanish yo que tú, Catalan jo de tu, French à ta place and Romanian în locul tău skip the if-clause altogether. Italian says 'if I were in you'.
If I'd known, I would have come earlier.
Relaxed Italian: se lo sapevo, venivo prima. Brazilian speech often shortens the if-clause to se eu soubesse.
Non so se verrà.
No sé si vendrá.
Je ne sais pas s'il viendra.
Não sei se ele vem.
Nu știu dacă vine.
No sé si vindrà.
I don't know if he'll come.
This si means 'whether', and after 'whether' the future is fine, even in French.
Anche se piove, usciamo.
Aunque llueva, saldremos.
Même s'il pleut, on sortira.
Mesmo que chova, a gente vai sair.
Chiar dacă plouă, ieșim.
Encara que plogui, sortirem.
Even if it rains, we'll go out.
Spanish aunque, Portuguese mesmo que and Catalan encara que take the subjunctive; French même si, Italian anche se and Romanian chiar dacă follow the rules of 'if'.
Take an umbrella in case it rains.
French au cas où is the one 'if' that takes the conditional.
