Asking questions

Rising voice, inversion, est-ce que, and the question words.

Les explications sont pour l’instant en anglais ; les exemples sont dans toutes les langues.

For a yes/no question, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Romanian and Catalan keep the word order of a statement and let the intonation rise at the end. Catalan often adds an unstressed que in front (Que plou? 'Is it raining?'). French can do the same in speech, but has two other options: est-ce que ('is it that') in front, or inversion of verb and subject, which is formal. Portuguese has its own 'is it that', é que, after a question word: Onde é que você mora?
