CĪVITĀTEM → ciudad · cité · città

The -TĀTEM ending became -dad, -té, -tà, -dade, -tat and -tate, the same as English -ty: ciudad, cité, città, cidade, ciutat and city are one word. Italian chopped it shortest and put the accent on what was left; Romanian cetate kept the ending whole but narrowed the meaning to 'fortress' (a city is oraș, from Hungarian).
