La historia
Latin reinforced 'self' twice: EGO-MET IPSISSIMUS, 'I-myself the very-most self'. Spoken Latin peeled off the -met- and the superlative into one word, the ancestor of mismo and même; Italian says 'this very' (stesso) instead.
