L’histoire
To employ someone was first to 'fold them into' a task. Italian shows the regular pl → pi (impiego); Spanish took the word from French — its own inherited descendant of the same verb family is llegar, from PLICĀRE 'to fold (the sails)', i.e. to arrive.
