L’histoire
Latin GN became a palatal n in the west (puño, pugno, punho, puny), but Romanian moved it to the lips: pumn, as in lemn 'wood' from LIGNUM. Fighting with fists was PUGNĀRE, hence pugnacious.
Parents anglais: pugnacious, pugilist
